What role does baptism play in identifying someone as an apprentice of Jesus? Have you been baptised?

In Matthew 27 we read how Barabbas, a guilty man, was released instead of Jesus, the only innocent man. What does this exchange mean for humanity and what does it mean for each of us personally?
